Got a fleet meeting or activity to post? Let the Foghorn know.

Commodore’s Corner, March 2003

Johanna and I have been discussing our plans for “Second Wind” at the lake this year. There are maintenance issues, up grades and commitment to use our investment for entertaining and vacations. The discussion started in earnest on ground hogs day, February 2, 2003. I was up early that Saturday morning waiting for the sunrise wondering if I would see my shadow, or would Spring be just around the corner. Would Punxatani Phil see his shadow? Does a ground hog burrowed in for the Winter 2000 miles away carry any weight on spring here in the Rio Grande Valley?

I pondered these things over a cup of coffee. And too, I really do want a new or good used headsail. Johanna laundered the curtains this winter and they all but fell apart. Cha ching! After I paid over $100.00 to have the oil changed this past winter I really need to learn basic maintenance on our in-board diesel engine. Perhaps this will be the year that I sand and refinish the exterior teak. What fun.

I know that Race Committee Chairman, Larry Jesse has a full plate of racing events scheduled for the winter and spring. Our racing participation is up, the spectators seem interested in “all those sailboats out there” and our after race socials are fun and well attended. The racing fleet seems well prepared to meet the challenge of club building. Please call or e-mail Larry or myself if you have any participation questions.

As for seminars, will we want “Sailing for Men” this year or are we interested in another “Sailing for Women” seminar? How about an on board cuisine extravaganza at a camp out raft up? I know that we have some talented Chefs in the club and those of us who have experienced “raft-up” cuisine would love the opportunity to try new food and drink.

I am proposing that our next Board Meeting be “open” to all members and their guests so that we can review our budget and set a few priorities for club activities this year. The meeting will be after the 1st series race on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 6:30 pm at the Dam Site Marina Restaurant. This will be a dinner meeting and we need to let the Restaurant know how many to expect. So please RSVP by Thursday, March 13 by calling or e-mailing me and bring your ideas, appetites and friends to this very important meeting.

Johanna and I look forward to another year with our friends, our club and hopefully you. See you at the lake.

Around the Buoys

On Saturday, January 25th, 10 boats came out for the first race of the 2003 season, the Frostbite. What a great day to sail! Warm enough, and pretty nice breeze. Paul Mariette made it four in a row on Spooky! The Strasias were second; John Bristol third.

On February 1st, the RGSC hosted the First Annual Rio Grande Cup, a team competition between Damsite and Rock Canyon marinas, with four boats per team. Saturday’s winds started late and didn’t fill in till late; still we had lots of close matches. The Rock Canyon team won the day… 10 matches to 2. So the big Crystal Cup will be at the Rock Canyon Marina till next year. Thanks to all of the skippers and crews who sailed the regatta. A big thanks to Richard Dittmar for Committee Boat duty and to Marty, for letting us use Windependent.

It didn’t stay this calm for the February 15 Chute Out; winds picked up to give a variety of sailing conditions for the day. Constellation, shown on port tack crossing in front of The Hunter and Footloose, would be the weekend’s overall winner with four 1sts.)

More Race Results: Chute Out

The Chute-out/Mid Winter Sailing Champs were February 15 and 16. We had a great week-end, good turn-out, a variety of wind conditions, close racing, and a nice get-together at the Damsite to watch the Cup races.

The New Mexico PHRF Championships are next week (March 1st & 2nd); I hope everyone will try to come out. Trophies will be given for the top five boats in each fleet. Yours in sailing; Larry

Racing tip from Larry: Generally, you should tack when headed. Sail into the header for at least two boat lengths before you tack, so that you sail on the new lifted tack longer. In ghosting and drifting conditions, sometimes it is more difficult to detect a header; what may appear to be a header can sometimes be “an apparent wind header.” This can fool you into tacking when you should continue on your present course. In these conditions it’s better not to tack the boat a lot, as this slows you. In these light conditions, think of keeping the boat moving

Sailor of the month…

One of us. Only because he is my slip neighbor do I know anything about him. He loves to race. Afterwards we get to sit in the cockpit and unwind. That is when I find out what he is really doing.

He is helping people. He is teaching people. He is making sailors.

What he does, is to tell everyone he meets that he races sailboats. Then he asks if they want to be crew. He doesn’t have many takers, but those he gets are excited and energetic, like he is. He gets young crew and old crew. I used to think he just wanted someone to do the work, but not true. He wants to spread his love of sailing. He is doing it, and it is beautiful to watch.

He is a natural teacher. He knows the names for things. He knows the racing rules. He likes people. He treats them all equally. Having had surgery on his neck and jaw this last year, he has all-of-a-sudden become more soft-spoken. He is more gentle and humorous. He is more giving and kind, at least to his crew. And I get to watch all this, being just 6 feet away.

More recently, he has offered himself to the local school system as a teacher of a sailing class, for free. I don’t think they took him up on the offer. What that shows me is a man willing to give completely of himself to people who may be interested in a sport this man loves. A true giver, a serious, sailor, and a good man, my friend, John Bristol.

Web Site

Paul Mariette has managed to partially update the web site, www.rgsc.org. It’s a challenge because he’s missing a “user ID” and information about how the site is managed. If a little research doesn’t turn up this info, one possibility would be to change site hosts and get new a user ID/password; another might be to get new ID/passwords from the present host.

Arizona Yacht Club Leukemia Cup

On January 21-22, several RGSC sailors were part of the RGSC contingent at Lake Pleasant, Arizona, who were sailing to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our sailors were a significant part of a fleet that raised $20,974 for the charity. Russ Jellison noted, “The weather was great in the high 60s to low 70s. Not much wind after the start gun went off though.

It was very similar to what happens at the Butte right after the start. They had roughly 90 boats sign up for this years’ event. It was quite a sight to see that many boats at the start line.”

Ship’s Store Needs Your Input

Michelle and I were glad to be asked to take over the responsibility of running the RGSC Ship’s Store. We have a lot of ideas and look forward to seeing the reactions of the membership.

Some of the items being considered include: Jazzed-up shirts, travel & ceramic mugs, caps & other assorted items. It is also hoped that there will be enough interest to generate some special items that will include individual boat names along with the RGSC logos.

Currently we have few items left in the store and so they are being sold at incredibly low-low prices. There is a selection of tan polo shirts with the RGSC Burgee logo and also some Sunrise Regatta T-shirts left. Call for sizes and pricing. There are also a few tie tack/pins in stocik.

We are looking for your input. Havy any items you would like to see in the store? Have you seen something that you think would work well for the club’s store? We’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to call meanytime or use the ship’s store e-mail address: rgscstore@aol.com .
All ideas are welcome and appreciated! Patrick Petracca.

Welcome Aboard!

Richard Dittmar is Southern Fleet Captain for 2003 and is planning a raft up or meeting, probably on March 22. He can be reached at 915-845-7540, rdittmar@att.net, or on his Hunter 26, “The Hunter”.

Jay Penn was elected as the new RGSC secretary. John T. Craddock and Carol Anne Byrnes are our newest board members.

Thirty years after a sail with Girl Scouts, Carol Anne, with sea-starved Pat, and Gerald, took sailing lessons in Santa Barbara and soon after bought Syzygy, now a “migratory” boat.

Many thanks also to our departing board members, Mary Paul and Rich Strasia.

Re: RGSC odds and ends

Date: 2/18/2003 4:08:09 PM Eastern Standard Time

From: J Nelson

Is Ernie Gunther the Kilo-Whiskey Mac? I saw him coming out of San Diego Bay as I was heading b ack into Harbor Island (musta been Super Bowl weekend). I frantically waved and hollered at him and he gave me a quizzical “what’s up?” look… I pointed to my stern hoping he would see the Algodones, New Mexico hailing port lettering on the boat. He probably had no ideas who I was… I sat next to him at last years Christmas party at Ken’s house. I’m sending a check off to you today, I guess just keep sending the Foghorn to the new Mexico address, I do make it home once a month.

Sailing out here is FANTASTIC for a person like me… none of the flukeyu winds to content with, generally quite benign… I’m living on my Newport 30 MkIII…. Not as good a sailing boat as the MkII but a little roomier at 31.5”. Anyway I haven’t raced or anything exciting like that; but learning a heck of a lot. I hope to get down to my little Catalina at Dam Site this coming weekend.

John Nelson, s/v Empyreal ’85 Newport 30 MkIII

Patrick Petracca, Katie Mae

Alan Lewrie Naval Adventures – by Dewey Lambdin

Are you a lover of British naval fiction? Does the thought of covert operations, resounding broadsides and hand-to-hand combat get your adrenaline pumping? If so, the Alan Lewrie Naval Adventures may be for you.

In the genre of Forrester’s Horatio Hornblower and Kent’s Richard Bolitho characters, American writer Dewey Lambdin creates his own reluctant hero in Alan Lewrie. The first in the ten book series, The King’s Coat, introduces us to the man who will become a colorful and favorite leader of men, irresistible to women and menacing to the most dangerous enemies. Forced into the role of midshipman under less than honorable circumstances, Lewrie soon emerges as a natural to the role of naval officer. Although Lewrie’s conduct ashore and in his personal life keep him in constant turmoil, on duty he is an unmatched force to be reckoned with.

A word of caution: the Alan Lewrie adventures are not for the faint of heart. Often graphic and seedy, Lambdin brings a truly American rake-hellishness to an otherwise honorable profession. Also at a benefit to the stories, Lambdin is writing in today’s style, crossing the gap between British honourability and modern America’s approach to life.

There are currently ten books in the series. The King’s Coat, the first, published in 1989 through Sea of Grey released in the fall of 2002 which ends with plenty of unresolved conflict to ensure future editions. For the collector, the early books can be found in various locations on the internet and ordered; however the Rio Grande Library has all the books in the series readily available.

So, if you think you can weather the storms and what they bring, slip into The King’s Coat, stand your watch and see what unfolds with the wind. >
