Elephant Butte Peninsula

"Elephant" formation and DamSite Marina at the south end of southern New Mexico's Elephant Butte Lake. With the dam outflow shut off, the lake is just beginning to recover from its lowest level of 2011. At higher lake levels, the "Elephant" can be circumnavigated, but not now; the Elephant is now a peninsula. The lake will have to rise ten feet or more before the Elephant is an island and can be circumnavigated again by even so much as a kayak or canoe, much less a sailboat.

Yes, Virginia, it's been a drought year
