Views of the Dam Site cove at Elephant Butte Lake

View from the south of Elephant Butte butte. Beyond it to the north is the main body of the lake, which is navigable by sailboats for about 15 miles at current lake levels. With the right lighting or some imagination, a viewer can see the profile of an elephant's head, trunk, and shoulders in the west side of the Butte.

View to northeast, with east side of Elephant Butte at left. Except at very low lake levels, the Butte is an island and can be circumnavigated, as is planned for the May 30th, 2009, Race to the Elephant.
