Sunrise Regatta pre-start, part 1

New Mexico Tech's J24, skippered by Brent Meins, cuts across the stern of the committee boat, Espoir. Braxton Merritt provided the committee boat, on which John Savickas and David and Cheryl Lither served as the race committee signal boat team. Later on during the regatta, the r.c. crew managed to rescue a couple of young people who had become separated from their jet-ski and were in the initial stages of hypothermia. The forecast winds of 10 to 20 mph, along with gusts that probably reached 30 mph at times, kept crews on their toes and made for a very fast regatta. Larry Jessee's Etchells, Constellation, completed the 10-mile race in 85 minutes, with an average speed of about a blistering 8 knots.

The J-24 Coyote, with Margaret and Vicky as crew and Bob Ellsworth as skipper, maneuvers through the chop.
